The event was excellent and attracted a wide range of exhibits. Notable amongst the fairground was David Littleboy's Motorcycle Speedway, which I have created a separate gallery for. A good collection of steam engines and other exhibits is always gathered here, a sample of which is included. These photographs were taken of the Ark and its transport at its recent appearance at the Ross on Wye Steam Engine Society's annual rally at Welland, Worcestershire in July 2008. The restoration has been completed to an extremely high standard and work is continuing to improve the ride and restore more of the lost features. The ride is currently the only travelling example of an Orton and Spooner speedway with full extension front travelling. The decor has been restored in the Orton and Spooner style of the 1930s and looks a treat, and is a complete contrast to the later Orton designs of Fred Fowle, which are perhaps more familiar to a lot of people. The paintwork style is similar to the ark of John Carter and Sons, which has also been restored to as near as possible the Orton factory paintwork. This series of photographs were taken near Hassall Green, where the canal runs from the Alsager direction, heading across towards Wheelock. Some interesting sights on this stretch of the canal, including the ability to be at eye level with the M6 Motorway! The result was a show which although was much later than usual was an event with all the usual elements and buzz. The weather was good too, and was a distinct improvement on the weather of the original dates this year! What follows is a small selection of photographs taken at this year's event. Anderton and Rowland's Grand Organ, the only 98-key Organ still with its showland owners. Barnaby Newton has built this magnificent 89 key Organ from scratch. It is one of the nicest 89 key organs ever to grace the showgrounds of this country. Well done Barnaby!! 89 -key Limonaire, built as an 87-key organ, under licence from Gavioli. The organ was restored by the late Gordon Hine, before passing to Brian Newth. Subsequently restored again to a high standard for Nigel Else, then later passed to Buxworth Steam Group and to latest owner Graham Atkinson David Downs's Magnificent Galloping Horses and 89-key Gavioli Organ. Fitted with a Savage Centre Engine What can I say about this one. Mr Frank Lythgoe's most beautiful 89-key Marenghi another view of Mr Radcliffe's magnificent Marenghi organ. Jimmy Graham's 89 key Page Organ. built for his Golden Gallopers and removed on his retirement. Eddie Hayward's 89 key Gavioli, worked for Sheppards and a branch of the Collins family, before being almost destroyed by the elements and by fire. Subsequently restored by Dean Organs for Eddie Hayward. Irvin's 89 key Marenghi Organ, Stourpaine 2008 The front of this organ suggests a Gavioli origin, but who knows. This chirpy little organ was built by Jimmy Verbeeck of Islington, London, to one of his own scales, and plays 61-key No2 Scale Music. There are at least three different versions of the 61 key Scale. In amongst those whirling lights and dazzling mirrors is a plethora of detail from scrolling and lining to gag cards with slogans and instructions, to full pictures. Although not considered by many art critics and experts to be of particular note, I would suggest they go and take a look! You also have to remember that much of the decoration is done by the Showmen themselves, often in far from ideal conditions, in the winter months, often outside. The initial batch of photographs are taken from rides present at the 2007 Great Dorset Steam Fair, although as time permits, I will be adding to the gallery from my library of photographs.
