Welcome to my collection of photographs, which I hope in time will grow to be representative of all my work and my interests.
In here you will eventually find photographs of all manner of things which I love, from country scenes and disused railway lines through to vintage transport and all the fun of the fair, with just about anything in between.
I really love my photography, and though I don't think I am that good at it, I have received a few favourable comments, so hopefully you will like what you see.
If there is nothing that interests you at the moment, check back soon, as you will find that more shots have been added and there may well be something you like :) |

 | 11th Apr 2009 | Ebury Hill April 2009
A very pleasant Easter visit to Ebury Hill and its surrounding area. This site must be in the top 5 of the Camping and Caravanning Club sites!!! Certainly our favourite.

 | 30th Jul 2008 | David Littleboy's Ark
David Littleboy's Motorcycle Speedway Ark has recently emerged following a full restoration.
These photographs were taken of the Ark and its transport at its recent appearance at the Ross on Wye Steam Engine Society's annual rally at Welland, Worcestershire in July 2008.
The restoration has been completed to an extremely high standard and work is continuing to improve the ride and restore more of the lost features.
The ride is currently the only travelling example of an Orton and Spooner speedway with full extension front travelling. The decor has been restored in the Orton and Spooner style of the 1930s and looks a treat, and is a complete contrast to the later Orton designs of Fred Fowle, which are perhaps more familiar to a lot of people. The paintwork style is similar to the ark of John Carter and Sons, which has also been restored to as near as possible the Orton factory paintwork. The paintwork on both machines has been done by Joby Carter's team

 | 26th Jul 2008 to 28th Jul 2008 | Welland Steam Rally, July 2008
Welland Steam Rally was held on its proper dates this year, after the dreadful floods that had large tracts of Worcestershire underwater, this time last year. The event was excellent and attracted a wide range of exhibits. Notable amongst the fairground was David Littleboy's Motorcycle Speedway, which I have created a separate gallery for. A good collection of steam engines and other exhibits is always gathered here, a sample of which is included. Very nice to see David Downs's Gallopers and 89-key Gavioli Organ appearing so far up country too :)

 | 13th Jul 2008 | Cheshire Steam Fair, Tabley
Tabley House is home to the Cheshire Steam Fair, where an excellent colleciton of exhibits was gathered together.
A very nice surprise was the reappearance on a showground after about 10 years of Frank Lythogoe's 89-key Marenghi.

 | 26th Jun 2008 | Shugborough Hall Steam Rally, Staffordshire Steam Festival
A first time event on the steam calendar this year was a lovely little event held at Shugborough Hall.
A reasonable collection of engines was gathered together, and the show was full of atmosphere, very informal and a very pleasant day.
Hopefully this will be on the Calendar for 2009!

 | 3rd Mar 2008 | Bishop's Castle
Bishop's Castle is a rather pretty small town nestled against the side of the South Shropshire Hills. England's oldest borough, these pictures give something of the flavour of this delightful place.

 | 17th Feb 2008 | Broom Junction
An exploration of the area once occupied by Broom station and Broom Junction, Junction of the East and West line which went from Fenny Compton to Broom Junction, and the Barnt Green -Evesham line, which only now exists between Barnt Green and Redditch. Broom was a north facing junction with the Barnt Green line, and during WW2 a south to East Curve was installed, making it a triangular junction. The signal box, on the Evesham side of the triangle, is still standingl

 | 2nd Jan 2008 | Foxfield Railway
A visit to the Foxfield Railway, Blythe Bridge. Restored from colliery operations, the railway is unusual amongst preserved lines in focusing on industrial railways. A very friendly line, we had a very enjoyable afternoon

 | 30th Dec 2007 | Gavioli Gathering
Gaviloli Gathering, North Newington, Oxfordshire
|
 | 28th Dec 2007 | Severn Valley Railway Christmas
A Friday afternoon on the Severn Valley Railway, between Christmas and New Year. The railway is currently only operable between Bewdley and Kidderminster Town owing to flood damage. On the day of our visit Stanier Class 5 45110 was in use, together with the LNER Gresley teak coaches and a BR Mk 1 half brake van

 | 23rd Dec 2007 | Shropshire Union Canal near Nantwich
Some canalside observations from the towpath.
|
 | 27th Nov 2007 | Bourton on the Water
Bourton on the Water is the classic cotswold picture postcard summer village. These pictures were taken on a grey November afternoon. The village was getting ready for Christmas and looked stunning, even in the mist and drizzle. I hope you like this little selection

 | 17th Nov 2007 | Trent and Mersey Canal, South East Cheshire
The Trent and Mersey canal runs through part of South East Cheshire on its way from Stoke on Trent to the Anderton lift and the Weaver Navigation. This series of photographs were taken near Hassall Green, where the canal runs from the Alsager direction, heading across towards Wheelock. Some interesting sights on this stretch of the canal, including the ability to be at eye level with the M6 Motorway!

 | 19th Oct 2007 to 21st Oct 2007 | Autumn at Ebury Hill
Some photographs of our last visit to Ebury Hill, in October 2007. This lovely little caravan site is a former Iron Age fort, and at another time has been a quarry. The extensively wooded site is a wildlife haven too. Nearby to the site is Haughmond Abbey, an English Heritage property, and reached via a field and woodland path from the site. I hope you enjoy this little selection of photographs

 | 11th Oct 2007 | Some Black and White images
Taking photographs without colour has long been a fascination of mine. This gallery contains a few recent examples, taken in Birmingham city centre and near Peckforton on the Cheshire Plain.
|
 | 21st Sep 2007 to 23rd Sep 2007 | Welland Steam Rally
Welland show is normally held in July, however problems with flooding of the River Severn in summer 2007 forced a reschedule of the show to September 2007. The result was a show which although was much later than usual was an event with all the usual elements and buzz. The weather was good too, and was a distinct improvement on the weather of the original dates this year! What follows is a small selection of photographs taken at this year's event.

 | 26th Aug 2007 to 2nd Sep 2007 | Great Dorset Steam Fair
A few photographs taken at this year's Great Dorset steam fair. I will add to these as time permits. I hope you like what you see.

 | | British Fairground Organs
This gallery will contain some of my many pictures of British Fairground organs. In order to qualify for inclusion here, the organ has to have worked, or been built in a style that was intended to work on the British fairground. The majority of the organs in this section, by their very nature, will be of the English standard scales as used by Chiappa Ltd, and the London Verbeeck variants as used by Jimmy Verbeeck of Islington.
28 Chiappa, 37 key London Verbeeck, 46 Gavioli/48 Chiappa, 61-key London Verbeeck, 65-key Gavioli, 87 key Gavioli, 89 key Gavioli No4, 89/98 Marenghi VB
A separate gallery will be created later for Dutch Street Organs and Dance/Cafe organs.
This gallery will be updated from time to time with additional photographs, so keep having a peek and see whats in here.

 | | Craig's Fairground art
Ever looked at a fairground ride in close-up? In amongst those whirling lights and dazzling mirrors is a plethora of detail from scrolling and lining to gag cards with slogans and instructions, to full pictures. Although not considered by many art critics and experts to be of particular note, I would suggest they go and take a look! You also have to remember that much of the decoration is done by the Showmen themselves, often in far from ideal conditions, in the winter months, often outside. The initial batch of photographs are taken from rides present at the 2007 Great Dorset Steam Fair, although as time permits, I will be adding to the gallery from my library of photographs.

I'm 36 and have been interested in photography since I was about 14. Until recently, all my work has been taken on a Fujica STX-1 SLR film camera, which I adore, have a large collection of lenses for and which still produces excellent results. However, recently, despite negatives being correctly exposed, the print results have been somewhat disappointing. With the rise of the digitally-operated processing laboratories designed with the processing of "point and shoot" prints in mind, I was facing increasing despondency at the apparrent constant underexposure of my work. Two choices lay open to me, to pay for professional quality hand developing, or to try the digital option to see how I took to it.
In 2007 I have taken the bull by the horns and have switched to taking digital photographs using a Canon Powershot A630, largely in fully manual mode. This has proved to me a number of things, not least the fact that although errors do of course occur, my photographs do not appear to be the dark lifeless images that have been produced recently by the new style labs.
The first collection of photographs that I am uploading is a series of pictures taken at this year's Great Dorset Steam Fair, although as time permits, I hope to include enough work to provide a broad overview of the sorts of images that I enjoy taking. Hopefully, you will enjoy looking at a few of them too. The second collection comprises some of my closeup pictures of fairground art.
My interests in steam and its unique application to the fairgrounds of Great Britain dates back to when I attended my first steam rally at the age of six weeks old!! In the slightly more distant past, members of my family worked as staff for Pat Collins, the famous showman of Walsall, Staffs. That business is still in existance today, with the flag being flown by Anthony Harris and his family, keeping the Collins's name very much alive and well.
As I have a soft spot for all sorts of machinery, you will also find on here examples of old farming machinery and steam-based agricultural machinery.
Oct 2007 - The latest purchase in the photography dept is a Pentax K10D Digital SLR. The first few hundred shots are nothing to write home about, but my first decent outing with it has been updated here, I took it to Ebury Hill for the first time, and the shots from there are all with the new camera. Hope you like!! You will see more from the trusty Pentax in the near future...
Please let me know what you think and any sensible suggestions for improving my work are always welcome!!
Please note the images uploaded to the website are low resolution images for internet web browser use, and are reduced to enable fast display and easier browsing. This may result in some loss of quality and sharpness which is not apparrent in the original photographs.
All the photographs shown on this site are my own original work and therefore are my copyright. Full sized high resolution images are available by arrangement to either 8MP or 10MP depending on the original camera used. Feel free to contact for further details.
July 2008 - have been busy updating the site with some more recent stuff. Hope you like what you see. I'm a firm fan of my Pentax K10D camera and am getting used to the controls of it now. Time to start looking at those accessories i think.. hehe
